Leather Sheath Care Guide

A well-cared-for leather sheath helps protect your knife during everyday carry and transport. At AG Cutlery, we recommend a simple routine: keep your sheath clean, let it dry naturally, and condition it sparingly when needed. Leather finishes vary, so follow any care instructions supplied with your sheath first.

Everyday Care

Before placing your knife in its sheath, make sure the blade is clean and completely dry. Wipe dust and dirt from the outside of the sheath with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid forcing the knife into the sheath, and keep your fingers clear of the cutting edge when inserting or removing it.

Cleaning Your Leather Sheath

For light marks, gently wipe the surface with a soft cloth that is slightly damp, not wet. Do not soak the leather or rinse it under running water. Avoid household cleaners, bleach, alcohol, solvents, and abrasive brushes, which can damage the finish. If deeper cleaning is needed, choose a leather cleaner suitable for your sheath's finish and test it on a small, hidden area first.

If Your Sheath Gets Wet

Remove the knife safely and blot excess moisture with a clean cloth. Let the sheath air-dry at room temperature in a ventilated spot, away from direct sunlight. Do not use a hair dryer, radiator, oven, or other direct heat source. Allow the sheath to dry fully before using it again.

Conditioning the Leather

If smooth, finished leather begins to feel dry, use a small amount of a conditioner intended for that type of leather. Test it on a hidden area first, as conditioners may darken the leather or change its appearance. Apply a thin layer to the exterior with a soft cloth, following the conditioner's directions, and wipe away excess. Avoid saturating the leather or coating the inside of the sheath.

Suede, nubuck, and specialty finishes require different care. Do not apply a standard leather conditioner to these finishes unless the product is specifically suitable.

Safe Storage

For extended storage, remove the knife from the leather sheath. Leather can retain moisture against the blade, increasing the risk of corrosion. Store the knife clean and dry in a suitable protective location, and keep the empty sheath in a cool, dry, ventilated space. Avoid damp areas, direct sunlight, and sealed plastic bags that can trap moisture. Keep knives and sheaths out of children's reach.

Check the Fit, Stitching, and Retention

Inspect the sheath regularly for loose stitching, damaged belt loops, worn straps, or cuts. Do not use a sheath that no longer holds the knife securely or allows the blade to pierce through. Avoid bending, stretching, or modifying the sheath to fit a different knife.

Quick Care Reminder

Clean and dry the blade before sheathing. Wipe the leather gently. Air-dry after moisture exposure. Condition sparingly with a suitable product. Store the knife separately for long periods.
